Bioinformatics Programmer (RNAi Core Facility)
The Candidate will be responsible for developing and designing a web-interface for a Functional Genomics facility at the NYU School of Medicine; monitoring project status, identifying and resolving problems which may impact the project results; maintaining software and hardware; working with departmental leadership on developing and implementing policies; consulting with departmental leadership regarding application alternatives, security, software usage, capacity planning, training, recovery and backup procedures. Individual should be able to seamlessly interface biology with computational skills, plus all related duties.
Requirements:
- BS/MS in computer science, computational biology, or bioinformatics, and at least 2 years professional programming experience.
- Experience with multiple programming languages, mainly Java and Perl and knowledge of SQL and Oracle database is required.
- Must have experience with Unix, web development including CSS and HTML.

Nurse Coordinator
Provides clinical leadership and coordination for a patient care unit consistent with the philosophy and goals of the institution, Departments of Nursing, and clinical service; direct patient care, prioritization and coordination of patient activities, development and education of staff.
Responsibilities
I. CLINICAL
- Provides clinical leadership by assessing, implementing and evaluating the care provided to patients and families in the designated unit.
- Acts as a professional role model to all levels of staff by incorporating expertise, critical thinking and related experience in all aspects of nursing process in the care of patients and families.
- Assumes responsibility for clinical operations of the unit collaborating with leadership for patient transfer and discharge activity.
- Provides direct patient care as needed to support the clinical operations of the unit.
- Demonstrates awareness and recognition of the clinical plan of care during the unit's hours of operation.
- Ensures and participates in providing ongoing patient/family education consistent with the individual needs of the patient/family.
- Assists in facilitating a collaborative interdisciplinary approach to achieve optimal patient care outcome.
- Serve as role model for staff in considering needs and behaviors of specific patient age groups and cultures.
- Participates in the development, promulgation, and implementation of process standards for the delivery of patient care relevant to area of practice.
II. LEADERSHIP & COORDINATION
- Supports the mission, philosophy, standards, goals and objectives of the institution, department, unit, and service line.
- Maintains scheduling and staffing for optimal availability of resources for safe, competent and effective patient care delivery.
- Provides leadership for coordination of unit activity, serving as a role model and resource during hours of operation.
- Ensures pertinent communication of patient care and unit related issues from nursing staff are conveyed to the health care team.
- Facilitates an environment conducive to creativity in practice, collaboration with all members of the health team, and the fostering of collegial relationships.
- Coordinates unit response to emergent patient and unit or clinical service events, communicating expeditiously with other leadership and response teams (airway, fire, etc.).
- Communicates significant patient care issues, family concerns, safety and critical events to Director of Nursing and/or the Administrative Director, seeking consultation and assistance when necessary.
- Identifies, initiates investigation and proactively responds on an immediate basis to potential and actual risk management issues per standards and institutional policies, reporting same to Director of Nursing and/or the Administrative Director .
- Participates in interviewing and selecting staff for the unit or clinical service.
- Guides, develops, and councils staff regarding practice and performance standards.
- Seeks consultation from the Director of Nursing in implementing disciplinary measures of an imminent nature, using principles of caring, fair and professional work environment.
- Communicates regularly with the Director of Nursing regarding matters of patient safety, clinical practice, staff performance, and participates in the implementation of staff improvement plans.
- Provides formal review of performance standards of staff assigned to the unit.
- Promotes patient, physician and other consumer satisfaction by facilitating excellent customer service by all members of the health care team.
- Assists with compliance with standards and regulations of agencies pertinent to the unit or clinical service.
- Demonstrates a spirit of collaboration and effective cooperation with other Departments regarding clinical activity of other units in the service and hospital.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the organization's Service Standards and incorporates them into the performance of responsibilities.
- Functions as a respectful member of the health care team.
III. EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT
- Collaborates with the Director of Nursing and Instructor in identifying, addressing, and utilizing available resources to meet the learning needs of professional and ancillary staff members. .
- Develops the unit milieu supportive of education and development of the nursing staff and other health care providers, consistent with the goals of a learning organization.
- Facilitates attendance and participation by staff in educational offerings.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of education and development activities in achieving desired outcomes.
- Promotes professional development plan to improve and sustain clinical and leadership competency.
- Serves as a support and resource for the education of health care providers as may occur during the unit's hours of operation.
IV. QUALITY IMPROVEMENT & RESEARCH
- Collaborates with Director of Nursing to support the unit-based quality and performance improvement program consistent with the service and departmental plan.
- Develops and implements action plans and identifies new opportunities for improvement.
- Fosters an environment that promotes patient/family, physician and staff satisfaction, and communicates issues and concerns to Director of Nursing.
- Maintains awareness of research protocols applicable to unit, ensures knowledge of staff, protects rights of patients, and participates in assessment/evaluation of outcomes.
- Participates in and fosters staff involvement in evidence based practice and other nursing research efforts.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Licensure: Current Registered Professional Nurse in New York
- Education: Baccalaureate degree in nursing required.
- Competence: A minimum of two years of clinical practice in the care of the patient population served; ability to apply nursing process toward achievement of specific outcomes in an organized fashion which addresses patient/family satisfaction;
- Progressive advancement on the clinical ladder, minimum of Nurse Clinician required; Senior Nurse Clinician level preferred.
- Demonstrates the potential for leadership by serving competently as group practice leader, resource nurse, or charge; demonstrates ability to develop, guide, motivate, nurture, and coach others; participates in service or departmental committees, staff and/or patient education programs.
- Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, and creative problem solving;
- Membership in pertinent professional organizations;
- Certification in relevant practice area preferred.
- Must have great physical stamina, manual dexterity, visual and aural acuity to perform responsibilities.

Research Coordinator
The candidate will work as part of a team to initiate and manage research studies in the most optimal fashion. Ensure the accurate execution of research protocols in accordance with Good Clinical Practices, HIPPA and required obligations to patient/subject, Principal Investigator, research team and the sponsor. Directly interface with patients/subjects and the Principal Investigator in support of the clinical trials. Establish liaisons within the School of Medicine, and NYU Medical Center that may include: Research Nurses, Research Pharmacists, Program Managers, Medical Technicians, Clinical Information Systems, Regulatory Services such as IRB and selective departments.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Thorough knowledge of research study, study rationale, study subject, and clinical procedures associated with the study.
- Recruitment capabilities and the screening of potential patients/subjects for eligibility to the study. This may include gathering information from the medical record, physician referral, advertisement and directly scheduling a visit to evaluate the patient/subject.
- Assist with the informed consent process and ensure that the patient/subject fully understands what is required of them throughout the study.
- Review all the elements of the screening process with the Principal Investigator that being: inclusion/exclusion criteria, completed informed consent, documentation of the event and the patient/subject willingness to participate in the study.
- Collaborate with various personnel that may be involved in assisting with specific aspects in the study.
- Interact with patient/subject and families in a courteous and professional manner. Be consistent and regularly follow through with your patient/subjects reminding them of visits and compliance. Extend this courteous and professional manner to staff within the School of Medicine and the Medical Center staff. Be cooperative at all times.
- Demonstrate knowledge of policies and procedures of the host institution where the study is being conducted and the regulatory requirements such as IRB and other approvals if necessary.
- Utilize available resources and established procedures to identify problems for quick resolution.
- Conduct study visits, obtain and document information within the time frame specified.
- Monitor any outward effects or issues regarding patient/subject safety and report this to the Principal Investigator, Physician and Research Nurse.
HIRING QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree plus one to two years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) Certification is preferred.
Research Data Associate (Breast)
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Utilize appropriate methodologies to collect patient information for the research project(s).
- Abstract data from the patient chart (e.g. laboratory or diagnostic test results, surgical/radiation treatment delivered, follow-up information, stage of disease, etc.); abstraction of data for publications, or data collection from outside physicians' offices.
- Design and use tools to facilitate data collection (e.g. calendars, schedules, tracking logs, etc.)
- Ensure protocol compliance (i.e. that standard steps regarding patient registration, eligibility criteria, follow-up, and informed consent is consistently followed in the time frame specified).
- Secure accurate signatures and forward documents and/or forms to the appropriate destination based on pertinent policies and procedures, continue to follow through with items and patients as part of research study.
- Compile data and assist in consolidating/analyzing data for presentation
- Provide reports to all parties (e.g. the principal investigator, co-investigators, Institutional Review Boards, etc).
- Complete accurate charts, report forms, and records from the beginning of research/study through the end.
- Input clinical, pathological, and follow-up information into database; ensure data is entered correctly and consistently wit the source document and completed in a timely and organized manner.
- Complete paperwork/forms in a neat, accurate, timely manner and ensure subsequent data collection is as required.
- Maintain copies of all required on-going documentation and forms.
- May perform library searches and retrieve reference materials from various sources using Medline and PubMed.
- May request articles from medical journals.
- May edit manuscripts for publication
- May prepare presentation for lectures, utilizing PowerPoint for slides.
- Coordinate the shipment/transfer of varied types of research materials among the various departments and labs (in the Clinical Cancer Center, Medical Center, Bellevue, and VA Medical Center)
- Work with departments, labs, other personnel and areas as needed to ensure the timely transfer of items and research materials such as : Histology slides, serum, tissue, and blood samples using appropriate precautions at all times.
- Respond to request in a timely manner, give/receive correct information, encourage required dialogue/follow-through.
- Adequate follow-up to ensure that requested materials are delivered according to all appropriate procedures and policies.

Research Nurse (Breast)
The Research Nurse works to provide and maintain comprehensive nursing care to adult cancer patients in a diverse clinical research setting. The standards of care provided to the research patient results from the ability to assess the health care needs while ensuring compliance to the requirements of the protocol. The Research Nurse collaborates with all members of the research team to effectively direct and manage all aspects of the research protocol with minimum supervision.
Responsibilities
CLINICAL
- Provides direct care to the research patient utilizing the nursing process with knowledge and understanding of the purpose and methodology of the protocol.
- Demonstrates critical nursing judgment to maintain the integrity of the research protocol without compromising patient safety.
- Demonstrates appropriate clinical skills relating to the execution of research protocols, such as determining eligibility, exclusion criteria, identifying need for dose modifications and toxicities.
- Demonstrates the ability to assess situations and make critical decisions affecting research procedures.
- Documents all clinical assessments and care provided, observing any changes in a patient's status and response to the protocol.
- Demonstrates the ability to practice independently within study guidelines.
- Administers medication safely and with knowledge of facility policies and procedures.
- Administers selective research medication safely with accountability and knowledge of its effect within the protocol domain and facility guidelines.
- Performs accurate and safe procedures within the scope of NYUMC nursing practice (vital sign monitoring, specimen collection, serial blood drawing via venipuncture or venous and central access intravenous lines, fluid delivery, and assisting with medical procedures.
- Maintains effective communication at all times.
- Educates research patients and families about the clinical study and maintaining optimal health.
- Participates actively in the informed consent process.
LEADERSHIP/COORDINATION
- Participates in PRMC meetings monthly. Reviews each protocol prior to approval at PRMC and addresses questions or concerns to the appropriate personnel (Principal Investigator, CTO Medical Director, Director of Nursing).
- Communicates study information to all staff in facilities where study is to be implemented and ensures that copy of protocol is available on site.
- When appropriate, creates protocol flow sheet to identify a brief summary of the protocol requirements for all staff nurses in the clinical settings where study is to be implemented.
- Develops, implements and evaluates a plan of care for each patient incorporating short and long term goals and expected outcomes of each patient enrolled in the study.
- Sets priorities based on patient care and protocol requirements.
- Communicates through verbal, nonverbal, written and computer methods effectively with all members of the health care team.
- Works with staff in a team approach to assist patient/protocol needs and will extend beyond the completed assignment to assist others.
- Assesses patient and family educational needs that may include informed consent process, protocol interventions, tests and procedures and disease process.
- Implements teaching independently and documents results of such teaching to ensure continuity of care through discharge from protocol.
- Maintains patient rights and confidentiality with attention to safety concerns for the patient.
EDUCATION/ DEVELOPMENT
- Participates in an orientation program (Cancer Center competencies) and staff development programs relevant to clinical specialty and studies.
- Participates in all study-related conferences, as assigned.
- Orients data managers and other study personnel to protocol requirements and work processes
- Is an active member of Oncology Nursing Society and ARC: Association of Research Coordinators. May be a member of ONS Clinical Trials SIG.
- Attends formal education outside the medical center (CEU's).
- Collaborates with other research nurses working on multi site studies across the US via list serves and phone contacts.
- Shares research education with others who work within the Cancer Institute.
- Completes the required IRBA/HIPAA tutorial.
EVALUATION/RESEARCH
- Participates in performance improvement initiatives in Cancer Institute, such as work redesign initiatives, Cancer Institute audits of departmental studies, and related work.
- Utilizes evidence-based practice methods to improve patient care.
- Participates in and/or coordinates study audits, in conjunction with industry or regulatory representatives.
- Follow Good Clinical Practice guidelines in accordance with federal regulations (IHC, April 1996).
- Maintains all study documents in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures and Data Safety and Monitoring Board.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
- Licensure as Registered Professional Nurse in NY with current registration
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
- Minimum of 3 years relevant nursing experience
- Demonstrate clinical competence in clinical trials nursing practice that includes the ability to execute complex research protocols and to assess and make critical decisions affecting research procedures.

Research Technician
The Research Technician must have experience in cell culture, dendritic cell preparation, T cell cloning, elispot and CTL assays, lab and equipment maintenance, purchasing, Facsanalysis. The incumbent will have an independent research project and will be supervised by a senior member of the laboratory.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform pre-clinical research on dendritic cell immunotherapies including basic cellular immunology, molecular biology, tissue culture and flow cytometry.
- Propagating T lymphocyte clones, establishing and propagating cancer cell lines
- Assists in developing new procedures and protocols for the research.
- Participates actively in developing, recommending and implementing new approved
- procedures, or modifications to existing policies and procedures.
- Maintains and updates technical knowledge.
HIRING QUALIFICATIONS:
- BS degree in Biology or related area with a minimum of two years professional experience required. Experience in basic cellular immunology, molecular biology, tissue culture and flow cytometry desirable.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. This includes experience writing procedures, training laboratory personnel and interacting with physicians and nurses. Knowledge of and experience with cellulary therapy a plus.
Senior Director of Development for Cancer
Over the past 163 years, philanthropic support from individuals, businesses, foundations and other organizations has provided the "life force" which has helped to make NYU Medical Center what it is today - one of the finest academic medical centers in the world.
At the NCI designated NYU Cancer Institute, we develop and maintain excellent programs in patient care, research, education, and prevention and serve a diverse patient population. We are currently seeking a dynamic individual who shares our desire to decrease and eliminate cancer as a significant problem throughout New York, the nation, and the world.
In this role working closely with the Director of the Cancer Institute, the Senior Director of Development will develop/implement effective strategies to attract funding (6 to 7 figure gifts) for the Medical Center's work in Cancer. Interacting with physicians and administrators of the Cancer Institute, the Senior Director will identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors and prospective donors. Responsibilities will also include staffing the CI Advisory Board and coordinating quarterly meetings.
Our events are also vital to the success of our research and operations. Working collaboratively with the Director of Special Events, the Senior Director will advise and support our annual Cancer Gala, and develop and implement strategies for post-event cultivation and solicitation.
We're looking for self-motivated and results-oriented candidates with at least a Bachelor's degree and experience in a similar position. The demonstrated abilities to meet fund-raising goals and effectively interact with donors and prospects are critical to excel in this position. Development database experience and solid working knowledge of MS Word and Excel are required. Exceptional organizational, communication, writing and networking skills are also essential, as well as the ability to meet deadlines.
