Become A Member

Faculty interested in becoming a member can either nominate themselves or be nominated by one of the NYUCI's leaders. The respective Program Leader reviews the membership application and supporting documents and then indicates his/her recommendation for approval or disapproval of membership. Applications are then forwarded to the NYUCI's Executive Committee, which functions as a Membership Committee for review and approval. The NYUCI's Director then makes a final decision on whether an application is accepted.

Programs

The Research Programs currently form the basic discovery units of the Institute and the CCSG. They meet full NCI guidelines, including benchmarks for competitively funded research and highly interactive, multi-investigator projects. Disease Management Groups focus more on the clinical research interests of the full range of human cancers, even if they are not a current, major area of NYUCI laboratory research.

Disease management Groups

Disease Management Groups are critical to the success of the NYUCI. The multidisciplinary team meets to plan, prioritize, and successfully implement disease or organ-specific protocols, as well as develop systems for banking human samples. Under optimal circumstances, NYU investigator-initiated research protocols are expected to be linked to one or more of the Institute's CCSG Research Programs. Disease Groups may meet as more classic multidisciplinary "Tumor Boards," with an additional focus on translational research. Active involvement of more basic scientists is encouraged since these investigators can appreciate the challenges of diagnosis and effective therapy. Some Disease Groups are likely to become "Developing" CCSG Research Programs if it is clear that they link substantial basic, translational, and clinical research.
